Shadow

Beyond the twilight,bleeding clouds
The red canopy, the painted faces blushed
Always behind me I warn you, my shadow
Lying on the ground replied the dark one
You never turn your back to sun,Or
perhaps, to some unknown land I may lead
where no one looks at your face so ugly
And with shapeless long body,so horrible.
If you are obedient I shall always follow
In all your joys and sorrows, ever be with you

when a man warns his shadow to be always behind, the shadow replies that it is possible only if the man never turns his back to sun.If he does, the shadow will be in the front, long and ugly.

What is "sun" here? usually it stands for light, truth, supreme power etc. But it does not fit in here. Please explain.
